Wintec Engineering and Trades Facility

Hamilton, New Zealand

An open-plan trades campus needed workshop furniture that could move with the class, take a heavy load, and still look like it belonged in a new building. Boscotek supplied the benches, mobile drawers and Flight Line storage.

From the project team

Boscotek attendance and input into the planning meetings was invaluable. Their contribution allowed Wintec to get the best value for money, understanding where best to spend and where to simplify our approach. Katherine MacGillivray, Project Manager, Wintec

The brief

Wintec's Engineering and Trades Facility was built for project-based teaching: automotive, welding, fabrication, engineering, plumbing, electrical, carpentry and construction sharing flexible, open workshops.

The fit-out went to tender against a tight standard. The successful range had to be specified in detail with Wintec, then installed to a short programme. Boscotek was selected. The systems were designed and manufactured in Australia by Wilson & Gilkes.

What was installed

Mobile Flight Line cabinets gave dust-resistant storage for precision tools, with clear polycarbonate roller shutters so the contents stay visible in a large open bay.

Mobile metal drawer cabinets on castors, with tray tops and partitioned drawers, moved with the class instead of locking tools to one wall.

Heavy-duty workbenches with height-adjustable legs set each station to the student, including those who needed a lower or higher working height. Tops were specified with Wintec for the load and the trade.

The outcome

Wintec received workshop furniture that matched the building: mobile where the teaching plan needed it, heavy-duty where the trade demanded it, and specified in the room rather than off a generic list.

Katherine MacGillivray later noted that planning and installation were managed to the programme, with the working relationship holding through a short install window.

Australian manufacturing, then and now

These systems were designed and manufactured in Australia by Wilson & Gilkes. Today, Boscotek continues that manufacturing lineage as part of OPIE Manufacturing Group, from 109 Russell Street, Emu Heights NSW 2750.
