Museums & Cultural Collections

Protecting Australia's Collections for Future Generations

Museums and cultural institutions are responsible for preserving some of Australia's most valuable scientific, historical and cultural collections. From centuries-old artefacts and Indigenous cultural material to zoological specimens, entomology collections and historical archives, every item represents knowledge that cannot simply be replaced.

Protecting these collections requires more than secure storage. It requires carefully designed environments that support long-term preservation, controlled access and efficient collection management while allowing curators, researchers and collection managers to safely retrieve and catalogue thousands of individual specimens.

For more than 60 years, Boscotek has designed and manufactured specialised storage systems in Australia. Working alongside museums, research institutions and scientific organisations, we develop custom storage solutions that protect valuable collections while making them accessible to the people responsible for preserving Australia's natural and cultural heritage.

Whether you're expanding an existing collection, designing a new archive or developing highly specialised storage for scientific specimens, this guide explores practical solutions for creating safe, efficient and future-ready collection storage.

Museums & Cultural Collections

Every Collection is Unique

Unlike traditional storage environments, museum collections often contain irreplaceable objects that require specialised handling and long-term protection. Storage systems must be designed around the collection itself, not the other way around.

Different collections demand different solutions. Examples include:

• Mammalogy collections
• Entomology collections
• Herbarium collections
• Geological collections
• Archaeological artefacts
• Indigenous cultural collections
• Historical archives
• Fine art storage
• Textile collections
• Scientific reference collections

Every collection presents unique challenges relating to size, weight, environmental control and accessibility.

Preservation Through Intelligent Design

Good collection storage is about protecting objects for decades, often centuries.

Storage systems should contribute to preservation by supporting:

• Controlled organisation
• Safe specimen handling
• Reduced unnecessary movement
• Protection from accidental damage
• Efficient cataloguing
• Secure access
• Long-term durability
• Future collection growth

When storage is designed correctly, collection managers spend less time moving specimens and more time researching, preserving and sharing knowledge.

Preservation Through Intelligent Design

Purpose-Built for Scientific Collections

Many museum collections require storage beyond the capabilities of standard cabinets. Oversized specimens, taxidermy collections, large skeletal material and preserved mammals often require custom-engineered storage solutions that maximise capacity while protecting delicate materials.

Boscotek designs custom systems including:

• Oversized specimen cabinets
• High-capacity drawer systems
• Full-height storage cabinets
• Roll-out specimen trays
• Collection archive cabinets
• Lockable storage systems
• Modular archive storage
• Compact collection storage
• Mobile storage systems
• Custom shelving solutions

Every system is engineered around the collection rather than forcing valuable specimens into standard-sized storage.
Environmental Protection Matters

Environmental Protection Matters

Preservation depends on creating stable environments that minimise unnecessary risk.

Depending on the application, storage systems may incorporate features supporting:

• Climate-controlled storage environments
• Sealed cabinet construction
• Reduced dust ingress
• Chemical-resistant finishes
• Secure locking systems
• Low-maintenance surfaces
• Stable heavy-duty construction
• Long-term structural integrity

These features help support the preservation strategies developed by conservators and collection managers.

Australian Museum Project

One example of Boscotek's specialist capability was the development of oversized mammalogy storage cabinets for the Australian Museum.

Working closely with the museum's team, Boscotek designed and manufactured custom storage systems specifically engineered to house large preserved mammal specimens safely and efficiently.

Rather than adapting existing products, the storage solution was purpose-built around the museum's collection and operational requirements. This project demonstrates how specialist storage can support the long-term preservation of nationally significant scientific collections.
